Food Waste Prevention
Food Waste Prevention in Business
In the Regulations businesses will have to demonstrate measures proposed and adopted to prevent food waste. A guide on food waste prevention was published recently.
Businesses already using a brown bin service in Ireland found initially that by source separating food waste and weighing it (brown bin service in Ireland is charged on a per kilo basis), were astounded by how much food waste they generate. This led some businesses to examine ways to prevent food waste such as food portion control and buying food prepared (e.g. potatoes peeled). Recently Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published A Guide “Less Food Waste-More Profit” which shows how to prevent food waste with tips on purchasing, storage, preparation, serving and post-cooking storage of food.

The STOP Food Waste programme is funded under the EPA National Waste Prevention Programme (NWPP). Waste Prevention is the preferred waste management option in Ireland. By not generating waste, we can eliminate the need to handle, transport, treat and dispose of waste. We can also avoid having to pay for these services. In light of the significant issues arising from the disposal of food waste, and the realisation of the costs associated with this, the NWPP Prevention Plan 2009-2012 set out to promote food waste prevention and home composting.
